What is the Beckham Law?

The Beckham Law, also known as the Spanish Expats Tax Regime, was introduced in 2005 to attract foreign talent to Spain with tax benefits. Named after footballer David Beckham, who was one of the first to benefit from it, the law allows qualifying expats to pay a flat tax rate on their Spanish income and exempt their foreign income and assets from Spanish taxes.

Recent amendments under Law 28/2022, known as the 'Start-up Law', have revised the Beckham Law regulations, easing its requirements and introducing new eligibility criteria.

As a rule of thumb, applying for the Beckham Law starts making sense if you earn more than €55,000 as an employee or own high-value assets outside of Spain.

Benefits of the Beckham Law

  • Flat tax rate

Enjoy a flat tax rate of 24% on your Spanish employment income until the first €600,000 instead of the progressive tax rates up to 50%. This is particularly beneficial for high-income earners relocating to Spain.

  • Foreign income exemption

Your foreign assets and income like rental earnings, dividends, interest and capital gains accrued outside Spain is exempt from Spanish taxes, leading to substantial savings in taxes.

  • Forget about 'Modelo 720'

If you are under the Beckham Law status you do not have to file Modelo 720, a tax form that must be filed annually by those owning more than €50,000 in foreign real estate, bank accounts or securities.
