- It has your NIE number.

- There's no photo on it.

How is it different from the White NIE?

1. Only EU/EEA citizens can get a Green NIE, but anyone can apply for a White NIE.

2. The Green NIE gives you residency permission, but the White NIE doesn't grant residency.

3. You can obtain your White NIE first and then apply for your Green NIE. The NIE number will be the same.

How to apply for a Green NIE

Step 1: Book an Appointment

1. Go to the official Spanish Immigration Appointments website.

2. Choose your region.

3. Select "Cualquier oficina" ("Any office"). This increases your chances of getting an appointment

4. Pick "Trámites Policía Nacional" ("National Police Procedures").

5. Choose "POLICIA-CERTIFICADO DE REGISTRO DE CIUDADANO DE LA U.E.".

6. Enter your NIE or passport number and full name.

7. You will be able to book an appointment if one is available.

Step 2: Gather your documents

Bring these documents to your appointment:

1. Two filled-out and signed EX-18 forms.

2. Your valid passport or national ID.

3. Proof you paid the fee (Form 790). You need to fill out Form 790 and pay the required fee in advance. Select "Certificado de registro de residente comunitario o Tarjeta de residencia de familiar de un ciudadano de la Unión." As of the time of this article, the fee is €12. You can pay the fee at any bank branch in Spain, where you’ll receive a receipt, or use your Spanish bank's app if you have an account.  Be sure to bring the receipt to your appointment as proof of payment.

4. Your appointment receipt. You can download it after securing your appointment.

Also, depending on your situation, you'll need the following documentation:

For Employees and Freelancers:

-Proof of Spanish Social Security registration. You can also provide your consent for public officials to access your Spanish Social Security and Tax Agency data.

For Students:

- Proof of university registration.

- European Health Insurance Card or health insurance proof.

Other situations:

- Proof of health insurance in Spain. You must bring documentation proving that you have public or private health insurance, contracted in Spain or in another country, as long as it provides coverage in Spain during your period of residence equivalent to that provided by the national health system. Pensioners meet this condition by providing certification of having healthcare coverage paid for by the State from which they receive their pension.

- Proof of enough money to live in Spain. That is documentation that proves you have sufficient resources for yourself and your family members for the period of residence in Spain. This can be proven by any means of evidence admitted by law, such as property titles, certified checks, documentation justifying the obtaining of capital income, or credit cards with bank certification that accredits the amount available as credit on said card. The bank statements should be from a Spanish bank or, at the very least, in the Spanish language.
